To the all occasion performer, Timothy Lawson, singer, actor, keyboardist and entertainer at heart, the words musical, natural cures and South Pacific all have very special meaning. And recently, in his debut as "Emile" in Bucyrus, Ohio, out of all the fantastic photos taken during South Pacific this past April-May 2007, this one (link above) has to be by far his favorite. "Sky/ocean blue happens to be my favorite color now for longer than I can remember. Also, the set was gorgeous, and the lighting great. I love every opportunity to dress up and look distinguished plus Nellie (Diana Robinson) and Emile (yours truly) both are happy and smiling in this one and smiles are contagious...," Mr. Lawson said. South Pacific - May 2007

What a grand experience playing a wealthy French plantation owner, Emile, in the Bucyrus Little Theatre's recent production of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, South Pacific. Refreshingly enjoyed singing "Some Enchanted Evening" over and over again to a most amazingly talented, vibrant, energetic, and beautiful Nellie (Diana) from PA, USA. I found our duet "I Could Say Life Is Just A Bowl of Jello..." a genuine delight. And the entire cast was fantastic in each of their respective roles and to work with, as well. The stage scenery was gorgeous. How I do miss that land of South Pacific make believe, now. -tl

This scene is the very last one when Emile returns home, alive, after engaging in reconaissance activities on a neighboring island, for the Navy. He thought he'd lost Nellie to the grips of racial prejudice. In this photo, Nellie serves a meal for Emile's children hoping it's not too late to embrace the role of wife and stepmother alongside the man she's realized she is in love with.
From stageleft or to the right side view of this photo, Emile takes note of Ngana and Nicole asking Nellie to sing with them the song they always sang with their father just before he joins in the singing ("Dites moi..."), Ngana and Nicole running into his arms.
As I played Emile in this scene, I can tell you that I began to literally view these three lovely ladies as my own true family, something to do with making yourself believable as the character you're playing, I guess. But, it truly was a very sweet experience to enjoy during 7 fun performances.
I must add that I was and am still honored to have acted/worked closely with Diana, Brooke, and Sophia last May. Always brimming with energy, wearing dance shoes, stage attire and cheerful to the last, Diana, shined brilliantly as Nellie Forbush.
And the professionalism and demeanor of young Brooke and Sophia during rehearsals, as well as, performances led me to conclude I was in the presence of two future stars of the stage or the movies. Actually, these two lovely young ladies have already been in other plays together.

South Pacific - May 2007 - Sarah Robertson & Ryan Richmond

Learning from other cast members is a perk of being in theatrical productions that I cherish. You not only get to share your unique gifts and talents on stage, but, you also get to observe other actors, singers, and dancers, in action, and in the process, to better yourself in areas they excell in by copying the good and the excellence you see in them. When I recall the regal posture Sarah (Liat) maintained at all times, it still inspires me to check myself and sit/stand with proper posture. And Ryan (Lootellan Cable) when singing, produced such melodious, pure sounds that I often asked myself "am I rested, relaxed, focused and hydrated enough to make vocal sounds as pure as Ryan's in my next scene/solo?" -tl

Thank goodness for a dedicated, talented and skillful director like Cindy Light without which an rusty actor like moi, may not have acted as well as he can sing. Merci beaucoup Cindy!
I still can't forget the jokes that Capt. Brackett (Mark L.) cracked throughout the entire rehearsal period as well as during performance nights before the show. Laughing is like my favorite thing to be doing and Mark sure could get me doing that often, and for that I am grateful. -tkljr

South Pacific - May 2007...Tahitian Noni Juice!

For anyone who's presence I enjoyed in the fun run of South Pacific at Bucyrus Little Theatre last May, I need to say that had it not been for my work with the Tahitian Noni International, Inc. company of Provo, Utah, USA as an Independent Product Consultant...

The Tahitian Noni fruit comes from the South Pacific French Polynesian island, Tahiti. It was because of my researching music from Tahiti at the Mansfield, Ohio public library that I came across the original movie South Pacific on DVD. Watching the DVD inspired me to desire playing "Emile" and sing and/or record "Some Enchanted Evening" and other similar songs on CD (a project I'm still working toward via a Fundraiser selling Tahitian Noni Softchews).

Next, Barbara, in the photo with me to the right, handed me a newspaper ad calling for substitute teachers needed by the Willard Schools. When I replied to this ad, the very first day I was called into the highschool to substitute in a Spanish classroom, on my way home, destiny and I met at the school's auditorium doors from whence I overheard the sounds of "Bali hai..." out in the hall. I am grateful to God for this impressively curative fruit and the juice made from it, as well as, the theatrical/musical experience I enjoyed recently because of it, along with 35 other wonderful and talented thespians from near the Bucyrus, Ohio area.-tkljr

Broadway comes to Mansfield, Ohio!

On September 8th, 2007, I was called and asked to tune the full-size concert grand piano at the Renaissance Theater of Mansfield, Ohio since my mentor was out of town and too far away to make it back in time to tune it by 2:00pm. As part of my compensation, I was given 5 tickets to the evening showing of "MUSIC OF THE NIGHT". My neighbors Mr. and Mrs. S. Whisler and their sweet daughter accompanied me. We all had a ball, to say the least. Wonderful singers, two women and one man. Wow! Their versions of "Memory", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and "Music of the Night" were magnificent! The "phantom" got a standing ovation. -tl

During the year 2005, I not only performed as keyboardist with Puerto Rico's hottest party band, KAMALEON, I also attended the I.V.A.I. Opera Camp as an authorized observer during July with master classes under the likes of Sherryl Milnes and Joan Dornemann (with whom I auditioned by the way) from the New York MET and also received personal voice lessons and coaching from legendary teacher of the Conservatory of Music of PR and exquisite lyric soprano, Ms. Zoraida Lopez. For all of these musical blessings I am so more than grateful, words are not enough to express what the year 2005 musically means to me. -tl

South Pacific - May 2007...My first guitar!

Since I currently do not have a piano in my apartment, most of the practice of my solos for South pacific was done accompanying myself with my classical nylon strung acoustic guitar.
Regarding my first guitar, you know, I don't really remember what brand name it was, but, it was a steel string flat-top guitar, I do believe and better yet, a gift from my dad (I love you dad), who while yet in Indiana, USA had it shipped to me in Puerto Rico where I lived with my mother, Rosa, and my brother, William. I was 9 years old at the time. There, on the island of enchantment (isla del encanto) we carried on under mother's protection, nearby her relatives, until dad was able to rejoin us thanks to the approval of his job transfer application. Thank you very much, Mr. Timothy Kent Lawson Jones, my wonderful dad, for such an appropriate gift for me. I have not stopped playing the guitar yet, can't see how or why I ever would stop playing it.-tkl

On Memorization...

I've been thinking for a while now that if I can learn all my lines for a role such as "Emile de Becque" in South Pacific, not at all just a few lines mind you, then certainly I can memorize many favorite verses from the Bible. And, wouldn't you know that the church where I have been privileged to share my music as singer and pianist for some time now has presented all who attend with the challenge of committing to memory no less than 50 Bible verses and then quoting/reciting them by memory in front of the congregation. The successful memorizer can earn or win a free lunch/lunches to Golden Corral, as stated by the pastor. And since Matthew chapter 5 has 48 verses all together, I feel that this chapter will make a great 48 verses to memorize, since it is Jesus Christ's sermon on the mount, a very famous sermon of the Lamb of Glory! What a joy it is to know that no matter what our occupation may be or what our station is in life, by regularly being aware of our spiritual needs and acting positively on this awareness, we can be happy and blessed, spiritually enriched.-tl

This is me at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico in July 2005 after a student recital during the I.V.A.I. Opera Camp in the City of Hato Rey, San Juan County, where I first studied music theory under Sr. Victor Meléndez Donhert back in the 198o's. In this picture, I hold a musical score next to beautiful grand piano in a practice room close to the 'teatro' where the student recitals are held. Thanks to these years of study at CMPR, I for years now have been able to help others to learn the basics of music here in Ohio, as well as, on the island of Puerto Rico where I was born. - tl
